After a full day exploring Universal Orlando’s theme parks, CityWalk gives UK couples the chance to slow things down, enjoy a proper meal, have a few drinks, and do something a little different from another evening back at the hotel.
And the best part? You don’t need a park ticket to enjoy a Universal CityWalk Orlando date night.
Whether you’re celebrating an anniversary, enjoying a child-free evening during a family holiday, or simply fancy some time together away from the theme-park crowds, CityWalk has plenty of options. You’ve travelled far from the UK, and sometimes, you just need a good night out with your special someone. If you’re not too jet lagged, maybe do this once you’ve checked in to your Universal or nearby hotel ?
We’ve put together what we think is the perfect Universal CityWalk Orlando date night, from dinner through to drinks and late-night entertainment.
Why Universal CityWalk is perfect for couples
CityWalk is much more than somewhere you walk through on the way to Universal Studios Florida or Islands of Adventure.
Once the sun goes down, it becomes a destination in its own right, with restaurants, bars, live entertainment, music, mini golf, a cinema and plenty of places to simply sit and enjoy the atmosphere.
Universal’s current CityWalk map lists a wide choice of full-service restaurants including VIVO Italian Kitchen, Bigfire, The Cowfish, Antojitos, Pat O’Brien’s and The Toothsome Chocolate Emporium, alongside nightlife and entertainment such as Red Coconut Club, CityWalk’s Rising Star, Hollywood Drive-In Golf, Universal’s Great Movie Escape and Universal Cinemark.
That makes it particularly good for a Universal CityWalk Orlando date night because you can build your evening around your own interests rather than simply going for dinner.
And for UK visitors, there’s another advantage: you can get to CityWalk without spending another day walking around a theme park.
Our perfect Universal CityWalk Orlando date night itinerary
If we were planning a Universal CityWalk Orlando date night for a British couple, this is how we’d do it.
5:30pm – Arrive at CityWalk
I’d recommend getting to CityWalk relatively early rather than waiting until late evening.
This gives you time to wander around, browse the shops and take in the atmosphere before dinner.
It’s also worth remembering that CityWalk’s operating hours vary, and individual restaurants and entertainment venues have their own opening times. Check the official Universal Orlando app or website before heading out.
If you’re driving, Universal currently offers free self-parking after 6pm, although restrictions can apply during special events such as Halloween Horror Nights.
For couples staying at one of Universal’s hotels, you can also use the resort’s transport options and avoid worrying about driving after drinks.
6:00pm – Start with dinner
For me, dinner is the most important part of a Universal CityWalk Orlando date night.
You don’t want somewhere that feels like a quick theme-park meal. You’re looking for somewhere where you can sit down, relax and actually talk.
There are several good choices.
VIVO Italian Kitchen
If you’re looking for a romantic option, VIVO Italian Kitchen would be very high on our list.
The restaurant has a more relaxed feel than some of the bigger, louder CityWalk venues and offers Italian favourites including pasta and pizza.
Universal itself recommends VIVO as an option for a romantic evening, highlighting its fresh pasta, pizza, homemade bread and wine selection.
For a couple who have spent the day riding roller coasters, this is exactly the sort of place I’d choose for a Universal CityWalk Orlando date night.
Sit down, order a drink, forget about the rides for a while and enjoy a proper meal.
Bigfire
If Italian isn’t your thing, Bigfire is another excellent choice.
The restaurant specialises in food cooked over different woods, giving it a distinctive smoky flavour, and there’s a cosy feel that works particularly well for an evening meal.
Universal also highlights Bigfire as one of its romantic CityWalk dining options.
And there’s an added bonus for couples who like a little bit of theatre with their food: tableside s’mores can provide a fun ending to the meal.
The Cowfish Sushi Burger Bar
For something a little more unusual, The Cowfish is worth considering.
It’s particularly good if you can’t agree on what you want to eat, as its menu combines sushi and burgers.
It’s not necessarily the traditional romantic dinner, but if your idea of a good Universal CityWalk Orlando date night is somewhere fun and different, it could be a great choice.
Pat O’Brien’s
If you’re planning an evening that is going to become more about entertainment and drinks, Pat O’Brien’s is another option.
The New Orleans-inspired venue is famous for its duelling pianos, making it much more than simply somewhere to eat.
The live piano entertainment is one of the reasons it works so well as part of a couples’ night out.
7:30pm – Take a stroll around CityWalk
Don’t rush straight from dinner into your next activity.
One of the nicest things about a Universal CityWalk Orlando date night is simply walking around together.
CityWalk looks very different after dark, and there are plenty of shops and photo opportunities along the way.
You can also pop into the Universal Studios Store if you’re looking for souvenirs. The current store includes merchandise from Harry Potter, Minions, Marvel, Jurassic World and Super Nintendo World, along with a Butterbeer counter.
For UK couples who have spent several days rushing from ride to ride, this slower part of the evening can actually be one of the nicest.
8:00pm – Choose your entertainment
This is where you can customise your Universal CityWalk Orlando date night.
You’ve got several possibilities.
Option 1: Hollywood Drive-In Golf (my personal favourite)
Fancy something competitive?
Hollywood Drive-In Golf features two 18-hole themed courses based around 1950s sci-fi and horror.
It’s a brilliant choice if you and your partner enjoy doing something together rather than simply sitting at a bar.
And yes, there is absolutely nothing wrong with making the loser buy the next round.
Universal describes the attraction as two interactive 18-hole courses, making it an easy activity to add to an evening at CityWalk. Also, it looks really great at night.
Option 2: Universal’s Great Movie Escape
If you enjoy escape rooms, this could be one of the most memorable parts of your Universal CityWalk Orlando date night.
Universal’s Great Movie Escape is an immersive escape-room-style experience based around movies, giving couples something completely different from the usual dinner-and-drinks evening.
It’s particularly good if you enjoy solving puzzles together.
Just be warned: depending on how competitive you both are, it could test the relationship!
Option 3: Universal Cinemark
Sometimes the perfect date is simply dinner followed by a movie.
Universal Cinemark at CityWalk has 20 auditoriums, including an XD screen, and reclining loungers.
For a couple who have already spent the day in the parks, this can be a particularly appealing option because it involves sitting down for a couple of hours.
9:30pm – Time for drinks
Now we get to the part that makes a Universal CityWalk Orlando date night feel like an actual night out rather than simply an evening meal.
There are several possibilities depending on the atmosphere you’re after.
Red Coconut Club
For couples who want music, cocktails and a more nightclub-style atmosphere, Red Coconut Club is one of the obvious choices.
Universal describes the venue as having a dance floor downstairs and a more intimate upstairs lounge, with an outdoor patio overlooking CityWalk.
That’s a great combination for couples because you can start with a drink and conversation before heading downstairs if you fancy dancing.
Pat O’Brien’s (ok we’re repeating ourselves here, but it still an option !)
If you prefer live entertainment to a traditional nightclub, head to Pat O’Brien’s.
The duelling pianos make it one of the more distinctive places to spend an evening at CityWalk.
You can sing along, have a drink and enjoy the atmosphere without needing to spend the night dancing.
CityWalk’s Rising Star
If you’re feeling brave, why not finish your Universal CityWalk Orlando date night with karaoke?
CityWalk’s Rising Star combines karaoke with a live band, so this isn’t your average pub karaoke night.
You can watch other people take the stage or, if you’ve had enough liquid courage, get up there yourself.
Universal currently lists Rising Star as one of CityWalk’s nightlife venues.
What about a romantic drink with a view?
If you don’t want a loud nightclub, don’t assume CityWalk isn’t for you.
One of the best things about a Universal CityWalk Orlando date night is that you can make it as relaxed or lively as you want.
Take your time wandering around, stop for a drink, find somewhere to sit and watch the crowds go by.
You don’t have to tick off every attraction.
In fact, if you’re visiting Orlando as a couple, I’d argue that doing less can sometimes make for a better evening.
You’ve probably spent the day rushing around Universal’s parks. CityWalk is your chance to slow down.
Can you visit CityWalk without a theme-park ticket?
Yes. Absolutely, and even if you’re not on a date night, CityWalk is worth a visit.
You don’t need a Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure or Epic Universe ticket simply to visit CityWalk.
That makes it a particularly useful option for UK couples who want an evening away from the parks.
You can make an entire Universal CityWalk Orlando date night out of dinner, drinks and entertainment without using another park day.
However, individual CityWalk attractions and entertainment venues may have their own tickets, age restrictions or cover charges, so always check the current details before you go. Universal’s CityWalk map specifically notes that some venues may have age restrictions or cover charges.
Is Universal CityWalk good for couples with children?
Absolutely — but there’s an important distinction.
If you’re looking for a genuine Universal CityWalk Orlando date night, you’ll probably want to choose some of the more adult-focused options.
CityWalk is still a massively family-friendly destination overall, but some nightlife venues are aimed much more towards adults.
Universal currently states that guests under 18 who aren’t accompanied by an eligible adult must leave CityWalk at 8pm, with exceptions including certain restaurant reservations and attractions.
That means parents staying at a Universal hotel can potentially make the most of CityWalk while the children are with a suitable adult, or you can plan your evening around one of the venues that works for your circumstances.
What should UK couples wear?
One advantage of a Universal CityWalk Orlando date night is that you don’t need to dress up like you’re going to a five-star restaurant.
If you’ve come straight from the parks, smart-casual is usually the sensible approach.
For women, I’d go for a comfortable summer dress, skirt or smart casual outfit.
For men, shorts or trousers with a polo shirt or casual shirt would work well.
The big thing to remember is that Orlando can remain very warm in the evening, particularly during the summer months.
And if you’ve been walking around Universal all day, comfortable shoes are absolutely essential.
Nobody wants a romantic evening ruined by blisters.
How much does a Universal CityWalk Orlando date night cost?
This is where things can vary enormously.
You could have a relatively inexpensive evening with a casual meal and a walk around CityWalk.
Or you could spend considerably more on a full-service restaurant, drinks and entertainment.
I’d budget separately for:
- Dinner
- Drinks
- Entertainment
- Parking or transport
- Any attraction tickets
- Tips
Remember that US restaurant prices generally don’t represent the final amount you’ll pay because sales tax (6% last time I checked) and gratuity are additional (assume 20%), and please do tip – waiting staff rely on them, and whilst that might be alien to us Brits, it’s only fair.
For UK visitors, I’d also keep an eye on your card’s foreign transaction fees and the GBP/USD exchange rate.
If you’re travelling to Orlando as a couple, it’s worth deciding your approximate evening budget before you arrive.
That way, you can enjoy your Universal CityWalk Orlando date night without worrying about how much you’ve spent until the following morning!

Choose an activity you can enjoy together.
9:30pm – Drinks
Head to Red Coconut Club for music and cocktails, or Pat O’Brien’s for the duelling pianos.
11:00pm – One final drink or dessert (didn’t mention above, but looking at you Voodoo Donut)
Then head back to your hotel before the Florida heat and Universal walking catch up with you.
For us, that is the perfect balance of food, entertainment, drinks and time together.
When is the best night for a Universal CityWalk date night?
There’s no single answer because it depends on the atmosphere you’re looking for.
If you want the liveliest possible evening, Friday or Saturday is likely to give you the biggest nightlife atmosphere.
If you’d prefer something a little more relaxed, consider a midweek evening.
The important thing is to check the individual venue hours before you go because CityWalk restaurants, bars and entertainment venues don’t all operate on exactly the same schedule.
And remember that CityWalk’s overall hours can vary too.
Our top tips for a Universal CityWalk Orlando date night
1. Don’t try to do everything
Pick one restaurant and one main activity.
The best Universal CityWalk Orlando date night isn’t necessarily the one where you visit the most places.
2. Make a reservation where appropriate
Popular restaurants can get busy, particularly at peak times.
If there’s somewhere specific you really want to eat, check whether reservations are available and book ahead.
3. Leave time between dinner and your activity
Don’t book everything back-to-back.
Give yourselves time to wander.
4. Remember the Florida weather
Evening temperatures can remain high, so don’t overdress.
5. Wear comfortable shoes
You may have spent the whole day walking around the parks before arriving at CityWalk.
6. Don’t forget the exchange rate
For British visitors, seemingly small purchases can add up quickly when you’re converting everything back to pounds.
7. Check opening hours shortly before your visit
CityWalk’s restaurants, entertainment venues and operating hours can change.

Is Universal CityWalk worth visiting for couples?
Absolutely.
In fact, I’d argue that Universal CityWalk Orlando date night deserves a place on the itinerary of any UK couple visiting Universal Orlando.
It’s easy to think of CityWalk as simply the place you pass through on your way into the parks.
But once the sun goes down, it becomes a completely different experience.
You can have a relaxed dinner, play mini golf, solve an escape room, watch a film, listen to live music, enjoy cocktails or dance the night away.
And perhaps most importantly, you can do all of this without spending another day in a theme park.
For couples who have flown from the UK to Orlando, that makes CityWalk a particularly good way to break up a busy holiday.
Sometimes you don’t need another roller coaster.
You just need good food, a couple of drinks and a night together.
And that’s exactly what makes a Universal CityWalk Orlando date night worth putting on your Orlando itinerary.
