Introduction
When most British people say “Disney,” they mean Orlando, or Disneyland Paris. Walt Disney World is the one they’ve grown up seeing on holiday programmes, the one their friends go to, the one that dominates every UK travel guide. Disneyland California โ the original, the one Walt Disney himself built and walked through โ tends to be an afterthought. Something you visit if you happen to be in Los Angeles rather than somewhere you plan a trip around.
That’s a mistake worth correcting. Disneyland Resort in Anaheim is a genuinely wonderful place to visit, and for certain types of UK traveller โ particularly those combining it with a wider California holiday โ it can be a more satisfying experience than Orlando. Smaller, more intimate, dripping in history, and in 2026 celebrating its 70th anniversary with a programme of entertainment that makes this an especially worthwhile year to visit.
This guide covers everything a British visitor needs to know about Disneyland California โ what it is, how it differs from Disney World, how to get there from the UK, how many days you need, and how to make the most of it.
What is Disneyland Resort โ and how is it different from Disney World?
This is the question UK visitors ask most often, and it’s worth answering clearly before anything else.
Walt Disney World is a sprawling resort covering 25,000 acres with four theme parks, two water parks, and 32 resort hotels. Disneyland Resort is two theme parks on roughly 500 acres โ under one square mile. In practical terms: Disney World is an entire destination that can occupy a fortnight. Disneyland is a theme park resort you can visit thoroughly in two to three days.
The two parks at Disneyland Resort are Disneyland Park โ the original, opened by Walt Disney himself on 17th July 1955 โ and Disney California Adventure, which opened in 2001 and has grown into a genuinely excellent park in its own right. Both are connected by the Downtown Disney dining and shopping district, and all three Disney Resort hotels are within easy walking distance.
The scale difference matters in a specific way for UK visitors. If you have three to four days, Disneyland is almost always the right call โ it is completable, manageable, and delivers the core Disney experience without requiring the level of planning and logistics that Disney World demands. You don’t need a spreadsheet to plan a Disneyland trip. You don’t need to book restaurants 60 days in advance or master a complex queue-skip system on day one. It’s a more relaxed, human-scale experience โ and that’s a genuine selling point, not a consolation prize.
What Disneyland has that Disney World doesn’t is history and authenticity. Walt Disney walked these paths. The layout of Disneyland Park reflects his personal vision in ways that later parks, designed by committee and built on different continents, cannot. The Matterhorn was built at his direction. New Orleans Square was his idea. There’s a reason Disney enthusiasts who’ve done both tend to have a particular affection for Anaheim โ it feels like the real thing, because it is.
2026 is a particularly good year to visit
Disneyland Resort is celebrating its 70th anniversary in 2026 with a programme of special entertainment running through 8th August, including the return of the Paint the Night parade, World of Color: Happiness nighttime spectacular, and Wondrous Journeys fireworks. If you’re visiting before August 2026, you’ll catch this milestone celebration at its peak.
Disney California Adventure is simultaneously marking its own 25th anniversary in 2026, making this a double celebration year across the whole resort.
Beyond the anniversary, a brand new Coco-themed boat ride is currently under construction near Pixar Pier, and Avengers Campus is being expanded with two new attractions โ Stark Flight Lab and Avengers Infinity Defense. The resort is genuinely investing in growth, which means repeat visitors will find new things and first-timers will arrive to a resort at a high-water mark.
Getting to Anaheim from the UK
Anaheim sits in Orange County, Southern California, approximately 30 miles south of central Los Angeles. For UK visitors, the journey involves flying to Los Angeles and then getting to the resort โ here’s how that works.
Flights from the UK
Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is the primary arrival point for UK visitors to Anaheim, located approximately 30 miles from the resort. Almost every major UK airport has direct or connecting services to LAX. From London, Virgin Atlantic and British Airways both operate direct Heathrow to LAX services. Norse Atlantic offers a lower-fare option from Gatwick. From regional airports including Manchester, Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Birmingham, connecting services via European or American hubs are readily available.
Return fares from London to LAX start from around ยฃ363 on Norse Atlantic, with more established carriers like Lufthansa and Air Canada typically ranging from ยฃ419 upwards โ though summer peak fares will be considerably higher than these baseline figures. Book as early as possible for July and August travel.
The flight from London to LA is approximately 10โ11 hours โ slightly longer than Orlando. Factor in the 8-hour time difference (Los Angeles is on Pacific Time) when planning your first day.
John Wayne Airport (SNA) in Orange County is a closer alternative to LAX, located just 18km from downtown Anaheim โ about half the distance of LAX. It has fewer direct UK connections but is worth checking if you’re already planning a stopover in a US hub city.
Getting from LAX to Anaheim
The driving distance from LAX to Anaheim is approximately 32 miles, taking around 38 minutes without traffic โ but LA traffic is notoriously unpredictable, and the journey can easily stretch to 60โ90 minutes at peak times. The options are:
Hire car โ the most practical choice for most UK visitors, particularly families. Around 40 rental car companies operate at LAX with courtesy shuttles from the terminal. Hiring a car gives you flexibility to explore beyond Anaheim and makes the journey back to the airport straightforward. Unlike Orlando, you don’t strictly need a car once you’re at the resort โ Disneyland is walkable from the surrounding hotels โ but you’ll want one if you’re combining the trip with Los Angeles or a wider California itinerary.
Pre-booked private transfer โ for families who don’t want to drive immediately after a long-haul flight, a private transfer to your hotel is a comfortable option. Budget approximately ยฃ60โยฃ100 each way for a family of four.
Shuttle services โ shared shuttle services run between LAX and Anaheim hotels. Slower than a private transfer but considerably cheaper, typically ยฃ20โยฃ35 per person.
How many days do you need?
Disneyland works beautifully for a two-day trip โ typically one day per park, maybe two days per park given you’ve travelled so far, to make it worth the journey. DisneyWorld starts to shine when you give it about six days and more. That fundamental difference shapes how UK visitors should think about incorporating Disneyland into their trip.
For most British visitors, Disneyland California isn’t a standalone long-haul destination in the same way Orlando is โ it’s an element of a broader California holiday. Two to four full park days (one for each park) is the minimum to do it justice. Three days is comfortable โ it allows you to revisit favourites, take a slower pace, and spend time in Downtown Disney without rushing. Four days is generous and suits anyone who wants to experience the resort at a leisurely pace or who has young children for whom a full park day is tiring.
With just two parks, you can easily experience most of what Disneyland Resort has to offer in two to three days, leaving time to explore San Diego, Santa Monica, or lounge at the beach. The resort’s compact size is a feature, not a limitation โ it means you see what you came to see without a week of relentless walking.
Disneyland Park โ what to know
Disneyland Park is the original and the one most British visitors have seen in photographs โ the Sleeping Beauty Castle at the end of Main Street USA, the Matterhorn mountain, Pirates of the Caribbean, the Haunted Mansion. Many of these attractions were built under Walt Disney’s personal direction and haven’t fundamentally changed in decades, which gives the park a quality that’s impossible to manufacture: genuine heritage.
Must-do rides in Disneyland Park:
Indiana Jones Adventure is one of the park’s signature rides and one that doesn’t exist at Walt Disney World โ a bumpy jeep journey through an ancient temple that holds up brilliantly. Queues can be long; ride it early in the morning or use Lightning Lane.
Space Mountain here is famously different from its Florida counterpart โ darker, faster, and with a musical score. British visitors who’ve done the Orlando version are often surprised by how much better the Anaheim original is.
Haunted Mansion is a classic dark ride beloved by generations of Disney fans and subtly different from the Florida version in ways enthusiasts will appreciate.
Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge occupies one end of the park and contains Rise of the Resistance โ one of the most extraordinary theme park experiences in the world โ alongside Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run. It’s a near-identical version of what exists at Hollywood Studios in Florida, but no less impressive for that.
Special for 2026: The 70th anniversary celebrations include a new meet-with-Walt animatronic experience, the return of the Paint the Night parade illuminating the park with brilliant lights, Wondrous Journeys fireworks, and a new scene inspired by Tangled on the It’s a Small World attraction. The celebrations run through 8th August 2026.
Disney California Adventure โ what to know
DCA, as regulars call it, is the younger and โ for thrill-seekers โ often the more exciting of the two parks. It’s themed around California itself, divided into distinct areas including Pixar Pier, Avengers Campus, Cars Land, Buena Vista Street, and Grizzly Peak.
Must-do rides in Disney California Adventure:
Radiator Springs Racers is consistently voted one of the best rides at any Disney park worldwide โ a racing car attraction set in the Cars universe that takes you through the American Southwest desert. Queues build extremely quickly; this is a rope drop priority or Lightning Lane purchase.
Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission BREAKOUT is the California Adventure version of what was the Tower of Terror โ a randomised drop ride housed in an enormous tower that feels genuinely unpredictable every time. Excellent.
WEB SLINGERS: A Spider-Man Adventure is an interactive, arm-controlled shooting ride set in Avengers Campus. Unlike most shooting rides, it uses motion sensing rather than a gun, which makes it more physically engaging and more surprising.
Incredicoaster is a fast, smooth outdoor coaster along the waterfront that works well for all ages and provides excellent views of the park.
Soarin’ โ currently running as Soarin’ Over California for DCA’s 25th anniversary until July 2026, then becoming the new Soarin’ Across America from July 2nd โ is a breathtaking hang-glider simulation that’s suitable for all ages and consistently one of the most popular attractions.
World of Color is the park’s signature evening show โ a spectacular display of illuminated fountains, projections, fire, and music staged across Paradise Bay. The 70th anniversary version, World of Color: Happiness!, runs through 8th August 2026. Viewing spots fill early; a dining package with reserved viewing is the most reliable way to secure a good sightline.
Lightning Lane at Disneyland โ how it works
The queue-skip system at Disneyland works similarly to Walt Disney World but with some differences worth knowing. There are three tiers:
Lightning Lane Multi Pass covers multiple attractions across both parks and works on a rolling basis โ book your first selection, ride it, book your next. Pricing starts at $30 per person per day and fluctuates based on demand. One meaningful difference from Orlando: at Disneyland, Lightning Lane Multi Pass allows one selection at a time rather than three in advance, so the strategy is slightly different โ you’re building your day sequentially rather than pre-loading three slots.
Lightning Lane Single Pass covers the highest-demand individual attractions not included in Multi Pass โ primarily Radiator Springs Racers and Rise of the Resistance. Radiator Springs Racers Single Pass typically costs $17โ$28 per person.
Lightning Lane Premier Pass provides one-time entry to every Lightning Lane attraction in both parks with no arrival windows. Premier Pass prices range from $300 to $449 per person depending on the day. For most visitors this is excessive โ Multi Pass plus a Single Pass for Radiator Springs Racers covers the same ground at a fraction of the cost.
A new benefit introduced in January 2026: guests staying at a Disneyland Resort hotel receive one complimentary Lightning Lane Multi Pass attraction per person per stay. It’s a small perk but a genuine one.
For a first-time UK visitor on a two or three-day trip, the honest advice is similar to Orlando: rope drop (arriving at park opening) and riding the biggest attractions first covers a remarkable amount of ground without paying for Lightning Lane. On a busy summer day, adding a Single Pass for Radiator Springs Racers is worth considering โ it can have 90-minute standby queues by mid-morning.
Where to stay
The Disneyland area offers three distinct accommodation options.
Disney’s on-site hotels โ there are three: the Grand Californian Hotel (a stunning Arts and Crafts lodge with a private park entrance), the Disneyland Hotel (undergoing renovation, reopening fully in 2025), and the Paradise Pier Hotel. Staying on-site puts you within walking distance of the parks, gives you access to early entry, and keeps the whole trip within the Disney ecosystem. The Grand Californian in particular is one of the most beautiful resort hotels in the US. It’s expensive, but worth considering for a special occasion trip.
Good Neighbour hotels โ Anaheim has dozens of hotels within easy walking distance of the resort entrance, ranging from budget chains to mid-range branded hotels. This is where most UK visitors on a managed budget will stay. Our Anaheim hotel listings cover a selection of the best options reviewed specifically for British visitors.
Further afield โ if you’re combining Disneyland with a wider LA trip, staying in central Los Angeles or Santa Monica and driving down for your park days is entirely practical. The 30-mile drive takes 35โ45 minutes outside peak hours, though LA traffic is genuinely variable.
Fitting Disneyland into a wider California itinerary
This is the question most British visitors to Disneyland are really asking. The answer depends on what else you want to do in California, but here are the most common combinations that work well.
Los Angeles base, Disneyland day trips: Stay in LA, drive down to Anaheim for two park days, then use the rest of your time in the city. This works well for couples and adults who want to split their time between Disney and the urban attractions of LA โ Hollywood, the Getty, Santa Monica, Venice Beach.
Disneyland then Pacific Coast Highway: Start in Anaheim for two to three park days, then pick up a hire car and drive north through Malibu and Santa Barbara to San Francisco. One of the classic California road trips, and Disneyland makes an excellent high-energy start before the more relaxed coastal drive.
Disneyland and San Diego: Anaheim is 90 minutes north of San Diego. A week that combines Disneyland with two or three days in San Diego โ the zoo, the beaches, Balboa Park โ is a superb California itinerary for families.
Disneyland as a standalone destination: For families with young children who don’t need or want a road trip, two to three nights in Anaheim with two park days is a self-contained, manageable holiday that works beautifully for a first Disney experience. Smaller than Orlando, less overwhelming, and absolutely capable of delivering the full Disney magic.
What to bear in mind as a UK visitor
A few things specific to British visitors that don’t always appear in American guides:
ESTA required. The same ESTA you’d need for an Orlando trip applies here โ $21, applied for online in advance at esta.cbp.dhs.gov. [Internal link: ESTA guide]
US travel insurance. Medical costs in California are just as prohibitive as Florida. Make sure your policy covers the USA specifically.
Driving on the right. If you’re hiring a car, California is your first introduction to right-hand traffic. The freeways are wide, well-signposted, and less intimidating than they look โ but take it slowly out of the hire car lot.
California weather. Anaheim is warm and dry for most of the year. Summer (JuneโSeptember) is hot โ typically 30โ35ยฐC โ with very little chance of rain. October and November are pleasant. December through February is the coolest period and the least crowded, with daytime temperatures around 18โ22ยฐC.
Tipping. As in Florida, 18โ20% is expected at table service restaurants. This is not optional.
